Growing Together: Honouring Culture and Community During Harmony Week at Children First

March 21, 2025

At Children First Early Education, we embrace Australia’s rich multicultural heritage and believe in fostering a sense of belonging, respect, and inclusivity within our centre. Harmony Week, celebrated from March 17th to 23rd, provides a wonderful opportunity to teach children about acceptance, respect, and unity while celebrating the diverse backgrounds that make up our community.

Since opening its doors in November 2024, Children First Angle Vale has been dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child feels valued. To mark this special occasion, our children and Educators dressed in orange, the official colour of Harmony Week, symbolising meaningful connections and mutual understanding.

The highlight of the celebrations was the creation of their very own "Friendship Flower"—a beautiful collaborative artwork made from the children's handprints painted in vibrant shades of orange. This special piece represents unity and the strength of our community when we come together.

Throughout the week, the children engaged in various fun and educational activities that celebrated diversity and inclusion. From storytelling sessions about different cultures to creative art projects, and even baking.

To further showcase togetherness, collaboration, and appreciation, the children and Educators made orange and poppyseed muffins for afternoon tea. The children confidently poured the ingredients into the mixing bowl and mixed them without assistance, taking the time to focus on using their sense of smell to explore ingredients such as orange zest, encouraging curiosity and sensory awareness.

Meanwhile, at Children First Athelstone, the children celebrated Harmony Week with a scooping and pouring exercise set up by their Educators. They placed some orange chickpeas and props into a tub with paper towel rolls, bottles, and spoons, allowing the children to freely explore the activity while openly discussing what inclusivity and diversity mean.

Across each of our Children First Early Education centres, we regularly engage in diverse cultural activities, celebrating both local Indigenous Australian traditions as well as international cultures and holidays. Through storytelling, music, art, and interactive experiences, we provide children with opportunities to learn about different backgrounds, fostering respect and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity from an early age.

At Children First Early Education, we understand that early childhood is a crucial time to instil values of respect, understanding, and inclusivity. Harmony Week celebrations are a beautiful reminder that by embracing our differences, we create a stronger, more connected community.
