Acknowledging National Reconciliation Week at Children First

June 5, 2025

At Children First Early Education, National Reconciliation Week is a meaningful time for reflection, celebration, and connection. Guided by the 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, our centres created powerful learning experiences that honoured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Through storytelling, art, music, play, and family involvement, children and Educators explored the rich histories and living traditions of Australia’s First Nations Peoples.

Each long daycare centre brought the spirit of Reconciliation Week to life in their own unique way. Here’s how:

Clay Echidnas and Cultural Identity with Children First Early Education Mernda

At Children First Early Education Mernda, children created echidnas out of clay and matchsticks, drawing inspiration from classroom resources and real images of the sacred animal. While sculpting, Educators led conversations about the echidna’s role in traditional stories and its connection to Aboriginal culture, highlighting the deep bond between land, animals, and identity.

A Sea of Hearts at Children First Early Education Mitcham

The foyer at Children First Early Education Mitcham was transformed into a beautiful 'Sea of Hearts' filled with handwritten notes of thanks, promises, and commitments to First Nations Peoples. Families and children were invited to reflect on what Reconciliation Week means to them, creating a powerful display of community spirit, respect, and hope.

Art and Instruments at Children First Early Education Lindisfarne

Children First Early Education Lindisfarne was alive with creativity as children engaged in centre-wide experiences celebrating Indigenous cultures. Senior Kindy children painted the Aboriginal flag onto their hands, hand-painted both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, and explored cultural instruments like the didgeridoo—learning through rhythm, colour, and story.

Symbols Matching Game with Children First Early Education Ingle Farm

Children First Early Education Ingle Farm Educators created a game using jar lids painted with traditional Aboriginal symbols. Children matched the stones to their corresponding artworks, sparking conversation about the meaning behind each marking. It was a fantastic way to deepen understanding of Indigenous symbols through interactive play.

Reconciliation Week at Children First Early Education reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing cultural understanding and embedding respect into everyday learning. From expressive art to quiet reflection, our centres offered meaningful ways for children to connect with Country, community, and culture.
